DESCRIPTION: EPW - Henri GrandJean & Co, Locle, tandem-winding minute repeater grande and petite sonnerie clockwatch with four-year perpetual calendar and moonphase, 57mm, massive 18K gold original Henri GrandJean HC with beautiful floral and bird engraving detail, five-knuckle hinges, small Jürgensen-style lips, gold cuvette engraved "N.37932, Federico Widmer, Guatemala" and with beautifully engine turned and foliate engraved border, glazed observational mvt cover, silver dial with raised gold detail, seconds-register with aperture for moonphase disk, SW-shift-locking-LS, fully capped lever escapement, white metal hairspring (likely palladium), likely 35-39J, s#37932 with matching serial number to cuvette. Gross weight of assembled watch 132.6 dwt (206.3 g). A rare and beautiful high grade complication made for the Central American market. This watch has an in-hand presence that is equal parts massive and magnificent, and it is truly a pleasure to hear its sonnerie with each passing quarter-hour!
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good repeat function and tone aside from occasional minute returns that include one extra strike and occasional returns at 59 minutes that include an extra hour strike, good grande and petite sonnerie function and tone aside from a frequent irregularity that watch most often includes three quarter-hour strikes with its sonnerie function at the passing hour (as the minute hand reaches 60 minutes, at which time no quarter-hour strikes would be expected), good sonnerie silence function, day, date, and moonphase functions advancing correctly as hands were set clockwise through several days time, all calendar functions advancing properly when adjusted via correction tabs under dial (with day and date hands moving in concert via a single correction tab), overhaul recommended if fully typical and consistent repeat and sonnerie function is desired by its next owner, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some typical fine to micro-fine scratches, repeat bridge with some mild ultra-fine scratch striations presumably from a past light wiping, winding wheel hubs and portions of perimeters with some micro-fine scratch striations presumably from a past sanding; excellent dial with a fine circular scratch within seconds-register, some additional fine to micro-fine scratches within seconds-register and within its four-year register; fine minute hand with oxide and finish loss to its perimeter and tip, other hands excellent; case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning detail, front lift spring allowing massive front lid to tilt back a bit toward closed with gravity; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystals.
ESTIMATE: $25000 - $50000
